Appropriate swimming attire for lap swimming / getting over anxiety

I’ve recently gotten a membership at my local Y to start swimming laps for fitness, something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. A few years back, I felt intimidated by the lean swimmers who seemed to know what they were doing and swam super fast.

Over the past few years, I’ve worn swim briefs under my trunks for support and comfort (in case my trunks come off during a dive, I wouldn’t be fully exposed).

I’ve realized how comfortable briefs are, but I struggle with the confidence to wear them while swimming laps. I’m a bit overweight but not morbidly obese, and I worry about how others perceive my appearance. Most of the swimmers I see in briefs are lean, which makes me feel out of place. I don’t want to wear trunks, as they feel like they would slow me down.

Does anyone have insights on what I should consider? I’m completely new to swimming for exercise and would appreciate any advice! Thanks in advance!

Just wear them. Nobody cares.

I’m a middle-aged guy swimming laps in briefs. My body isn’t perfect, but I don’t let that stop me. I swim for fitness, not competition. I switched to briefs from baggy trunks because they’re just more comfortable. I’ve seen articles discussing the rising popularity of briefs, and I started with them from day one—never looking back! Just pick a dark color to blend in better and go with reliable brands like Speedo or Tyr. Honestly, you might be surprised how little attention you actually get.

I agree! As a woman who swims laps, I really feel that no one cares what you’re wearing. People are busy focusing on their workouts and aren’t paying attention to you.

@Tian
When you finally wear them, you’ll love it! Walk out confidently and don’t worry; no one is watching.

If you feel comfortable in briefs, just wear them! To heck with others’ judgment. Once you’re under the water, nobody will notice anyway. Wearing briefs can truly enhance your self-confidence. It might feel awkward at first, but you’ll adjust quickly.

Once you follow basic lane etiquette, nobody cares what you wear. Go for what’s comfortable.

Jammers are incredibly comfortable as well. You might want to try them for a more subtle option.

I love jammers! They’re comfy and feel great in the water.

Exactly! Jammers give you the best of both worlds—But if you prefer briefs, go for those.

If you feel most comfortable in briefs, wear them! I swim laps in briefs three times a week and have never gotten comments. I really don’t think others care.

I used to feel weird with the lifeguard watching, like I was being judged.

@Ozzie
Former lifeguard here. Honestly, they’re just making sure everyone is in proper swim gear.

All the swimmers I know are open-minded and just happy to see someone swimming. We’re all friendly and not judging each other.

I’m typically one of the faster swimmers at my Y and honestly don’t pay attention to what others are wearing. Most people are just focused on their own swimming.

Exactly! Everyone is just trying to focus on their own workout.

(1) Nobody else cares what you wear; it’s really all in your head.

(2) Just wear jammers.

You’ll see all types of body shapes at the pool. The Y is one of the most welcoming environments!

Everyone is focused on their workouts; wear what you want.

No one’s really looking at you—they’re focused on the pool bottom.

At first, it feels different to wear just briefs, but it often becomes a confidence boost.

Wear whatever you feel comfortable in; nobody cares.
