Cal Poly Swim and Dive capped off one of its strongest seasons in recent history with a stellar showing at the Big West Swim and Dive Championships in Houston, Texas, from Feb. 12-15. The Mustangs secured multiple program records and two individual conference titles in a dramatic finale to the season.
The men’s team finished third overall with 603 points, while the women’s team placed sixth with 268 points. Junior standouts Evan Yoo and Drew Huston led the way, claiming Big West championships in their respective events.
Huston defended his title in the 200-yard backstroke, resetting his own program record in the process. Meanwhile, Yoo dominated the 200-yard breaststroke, setting both a program and Big West record. Yoo’s victory capped off an impressive season in which he won all individual events across his last three meets.
This season marked Cal Poly’s return to the Big West Conference for the first time since 2010. The Mustangs entered the championships undefeated in conference dual meets but faced stiff competition from UC Santa Barbara, which swept the team titles.
Mustangs Rewrite Program Record Books
The Mustangs made an impact from the start, setting multiple program records throughout the championships. The men’s and women’s 200-yard medley relay teams each broke school records on the opening day. The women’s squad featured juniors Kiersten Weiler, Melia Costa, Mikaela Gomez, and senior Summer Cheng. The men’s team—comprising Huston, Yoo, junior Finn Schlamp, and junior Jonathan Butler—reset their program mark for the fourth time this season.
In total, Cal Poly swimmers posted 17 new top-five times in program history, with six setting all-time school records.
The Mustangs’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of Huston, Butler, freshman Lucas Crother-Collado, and senior Evan O’Connell finally broke the program record they had been chasing all season. Additionally, Yoo set a school-best time in the 200-yard individual medley to go along with his breaststroke victory, while Huston’s backstroke win solidified his place among the program’s top competitors.
With a historic season now in the books, the Mustangs look ahead to building on their momentum in the seasons to come.
