Do Goggles Really Make a Difference

I’ve been swimming for about 5 years and have used these goggles with good results. They rarely fog up and are comfy. Now that I’m getting more serious about swimming and upgrading my gear, I’ve been told that vanquishers are better and might make me faster. Should I upgrade or stick with what I’m using?

Stick with what you like. Goggles aren’t going to affect your speed much. Your suit and cap may help, but training is what really makes the difference! Best of luck!

Goggles are very personal since face shapes vary. Some people take a while to find the right fit, while others like you find it on the first try. If they feel good and work for you, then you’re good to go. The ones in your picture look aerodynamic.

Those aren’t traditional racing goggles, so that’s probably why you’re getting opinions about them. I’m not convinced that goggles make a significant difference in speed. What kind of meets are you racing in? If tenths of a second don’t impact your livelihood, then just stick with what you like.

I’d worry about whether the goggles you linked will stay secure during a dive. If you’re not diving, they seem fine as you’ve noticed. Just be sure to test them with some dives before you compete.

Goggles are less important than body position for speed. For me, they matter more during dives from a block or deck. Some goggles slide off my face, some leak, and others fit perfectly. If you’re not doing dive starts, just stick with what’s comfortable.

I use ‘Form’ goggles that have a heads-up display and track my progress and SWOLF. They fit really well, and I only notice a bit of fogging after about 45 minutes!

Nice!

Absolutely! Not having to count laps has made me enjoy swimming more, especially with headphones too.

That sounds awesome! I feel like investing in motivation is worth it if you can afford it. I got the Delphin so I can listen to audiobooks. It was pricey for a single-purpose device, but I’m sure it’ll get me in the pool more often.

Whatever feels comfy and stays on your face. Unless you’ve tried everything and still want to find every last second, goggles don’t really matter.

Goggles matter as long as they don’t leak. Beyond that, they don’t really affect your performance.

You don’t need to upgrade.

Goggles can technically help you swim faster, but in reality, it’s just by milliseconds. Look for something low profile that doesn’t stick out and cause drag. I use Arena Cobras, which are great. Ultimately, your training in and out of the water is what really matters.

I think goggles are important if you want to keep your eyes safe underwater. I once forgot mine, and it was a mess when I ran into someone. Goggles help you avoid accidentally bumping into people!
