Eat Before Swimming?

I swim 5 days a week for 50-55 minutes, 2000-2500m, using front crawl. I go at 7:30 AM and don’t eat before, having breakfast about an hour after. What’s best? Should I eat something before for energy?

Spoonful of peanut butter as you run out the door half dressed.

I know this feeling.

Me too

I thought I came up with this. Anything more and I get cramps.

Agree with this strongly.

Maybe just a banana - but often nothing. That’s what I do when I swim even earlier.

Banana 100%. Big meal after.

I do this too. Sometimes a spoonful of peanut/almond butter and/or a small handful of almonds/walnuts. Mornings are not my best time.

Yes, I was thinking of maybe a banana. How long before swimming do you eat it?

On the way to the pool or right before I leave.

30 minutes.

I swim in the morning on an empty stomach too!

Eat after. I’m not hungry early in the morning anyway.

You should eat something, even a cereal bar, a few cookies, a piece of toast, a banana, etc. You will swim better, and it’s better for you in general (says my dietitian, even though I am not a morning person).

I eat a big banana, or a couple of slices of toast with honey and peanut butter if I am hungry (it usually takes about an hour for my stomach to wake up enough for food, haha).

I always have to eat something before or I get dizzy and am starving the whole workout. Usually a Clif bar, and after about a week I do not feel it at all when swimming.

Three eggs and a grapefruit an hour before swimming. Otherwise, I run out of energy halfway through my workout.

Yes, I know I am lucky to be able to afford that these days! Food costs stop many people from having good food!!
