Is 72 calories really accurate

It calculates calories using heart rate and time. What heart rate monitor are you using for swimming?

Fitbit Inspire HR.

My Inspire HR doesn’t perform well underwater with heart rate tracking.

That should be fine. Odd.

Your Fitbit might need an update. Mine was showing really off numbers until I updated it.

Mine has been acting up for a few months, but I’m on the latest update. That’s weird! Maybe it’s getting old, so it could be a hardware issue.

Before Garmin started heart rate tracking for swimming, my calorie estimates were way too low. With the HR tracking, it’s much better, but I still think they’re low based on how hard I feel like I’m working compared to running or biking.

@Cairo
Same here.

I just grabbed a screenshot from my last swim session. As a shorter person, my calorie totals seem right for me. I’ve been swimming regularly for two years, so I’m past the beginner’s benefit.

Fitbit really struggles with tracking swimming because it can’t measure heart rate in the water. It also bothered me that it didn’t track laps. That poor swimming data made me switch to Garmin last year, which works much better.

@Arlo
I’ve considered switching to Garmin too. My Fitbit isn’t accurate with lap counting during flip turns. How is your Garmin?

Garmin does nearly everything better, and I’m pleased with the switch. My only two complaints are that it’s heavier due to the battery life and struggles with sleep tracking sometimes.

@Arlo
I wish Garmin would release a new swim watch, like Swim 3, that’s more modern. Swim 2 feels clunky. Still, Garmin is the only one I’ve tried that accurately understands when I’m kicking or pulling.

Stop and check your heart rate every few minutes, then estimate the calories burned.

No.

No.

Try asking a chatbot about your height, weight, age, and swim routine. It can calculate your calories for you.

I can’t stand chatbots. I prefer human interactions.

That’s your choice, but you’re using a chatbot for help, not replacing any human conversation. You wouldn’t ask friends to calculate your calories either.

That’s a very naive view. It’s like saying in 2004 that you wouldn’t use Google. Use it as a helpful tool, and you might find it extremely useful.

That’s okay. I asked a chatbot about my swimming stats, and it told me I burned a lot of calories. I’m keeping that figure as mine. You should have taken the chance while you could. Stick to your 72 calories.

@Reed
Haha, good one!
