New Pool Owner - Feeling Overwhelmed, Help!

Hey everyone,

I just bought a house that has a pool, which I didn’t really want, but the house fit everything else we needed. It’s a small saltwater pool (7x15, 5 ft deep). I’ve never had a pool before, and it’s been a lot to handle. The previous owners didn’t take care of things, so now we’re dealing with leaks (caused by a tree they planted over the pipes) and issues with the salt chlorinator.

The salt cell is flashing errors, the output is set at 100%, but the pool is still turning green. We’re getting quotes for $760 to replumb and $2000 to replace the salt cell. It feels like a lot, especially since we haven’t even been here for two months.

Is this normal for pools? How often do you need to replace or repair these things? Is it just our pool, or do all pools require this much maintenance? I’m starting to consider just covering it because it’s becoming a headache. Any advice on what to expect moving forward would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Last year, I was in a similar situation as yours. I now have a firm grasp of the situation. So in a few months, you’ll be an expert.

@AquaAdventurer I appreciate your feedback. Though I feel like I’ve learned a lot in the last few weeks, I’m anxious about the mechanics. Thank you very much.

@BreaststrokeBuff Although the kids and wife adore their pool, I still don’t think it’s a good idea. All I do is keep it going. Swimming and all that is not my thing, but I’m glad kids like it. However, if I were the only one in this place, I would tear that s*** to pieces and discard it. To be honest with you, AF maintaining a pool annoys me.

I have a chlorine system instead of a salt system. I can’t really assist with your query since I don’t have any hard pipes; instead, I mine the flexible pipes that are above ground. However, I wanted you to know that the tension goes away and you will become an expert at it very quickly.
Stress is simply an indication that you are a new homeowner who values their property and wants to take good care of it. You’re a pro, buddy.

We hired a pool man for $100 to come instruct us after purchasing a home with a pool. It’s still functioning properly ten years later.

I would recommend trouble-free pool if you want to maintain and manage the pool. We are a group of people that maintain our own pools and steer clear of bad advise from pool stores and needless chemicals. Additionally, there are communities for hardware and similar queries to yours. Although I can’t directly respond to your question, I can verify that the method to KEEP the pool operating and fix issues is really reliable, simple, and affordable if you choose to take any necessary steps to get it going again.
