I find it more natural and less stressful to keep my fingers apart, but I’ve heard that it lets water slip through your fingers.
Very slightly apart, kind of relaxed and close together with a small gap between fingers

It feels so strange trying to keep them slightly open instead of tight, which is what I normally do. It literally feels like having little paddles when I do it.

like cupping a pair of DD…
That’s what I was told, lol.
slip through your fingers?
You might think so, but it doesn’t actually happen. Having a bit of space gives you better leverage. Just allow for natural, relaxed spacing.

Exactly! The gaps create vortexes behind the hand that stop water from flowing through. Hannah Fry made a great little Instagram reel about it.
Keep your hand relaxed with fingers pointing downward. That’s how far apart to have your fingers while swimming freestyle.
All of the above are correct: not clenched together, but relaxed and natural. Remember, your paddle goes from your fingertips to your elbow; it’s not just about your hands!
They should be slightly apart. Think of the webbed feet of ducks.
Relaxed. There are properties of water that prevent it from just slipping through your fingers. Van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonding make water not so slippery.
They should remain relaxed.
Keep them relaxed, as if you’re not gripping anything.
Apart and relaxed. Studies show this gives better pull power.
I got swimmer’s elbow when I kept my fingers together.
Think about holding a tennis ball. It’s kind of like that.
