What is the ideal temperature for swimming?

Hey folks, summer’s here and it’s heating up. I’m thinking about taking a dip in the pool, but I always argue with my friends about the perfect water temperature. Some folks like it bath-tub warm, while others prefer it refreshingly chilly. What’s the ideal temperature for swimming? Is there a magic number, or does it depend on what you’re using the pool for? Let’s hear your thoughts and experiences

78-80 is my ideal. Anything warmer is too warm for any serious swimming

Depending on the type of swimming being done, activity level, and personal choice, there are several optimal temperatures for swimming. The ideal temperature for swimming is approximately, 78-82°F (25.5-28°C), this range is at least comfortable for most swimmers, allowing for extended periods in the water without feeling too cold or too warm.

According to FINA regulations, a competition pool should have a temperature between 25–28°C. Obviously, recreational pools have different needs than competition requirements, but that’s your target for lap swimming IMO.

Hello Nelly,
The ideal water temperature for swimming depends on your preference, age, and the activity. Here are some guidelines:

  • Lap Swimming/Athletic Swimming for Adults: 78°F-82°F (25°C-27°C)
  • Children: 82°F-86°F (27°C-30°C)
  • Babies: 84°F-86°F (28°C-30°C)
  • Older Adults: 82°F-86°F (27°C-30°C)
  • Pregnant Adults: 78°F-84°F (25°C-28°C)
  • Obese Adults: 80°F-86°F (26°C-30°C)
  • Regular Adults: 85°F-89°F (29°C-31°C)

Do not swim in a pool that heated. It will be difficult to complete a practice at temperatures above 80F. Competitive pools are typically approximately 72 degrees Fahrenheit, which feels cool when you first enter. Your typical practice pool is typically between 74 and 76 feet long, depending on the facility.
