What is up with the Poseidon sign at my YMCA pool

Hey I just joined the YMCA and noticed this neon sign that says Poseidon. It’s always lit up whenever I’m at the pool, so it can’t be a mascot, right? I searched for it online but only found stuff about Greek mythology and it seems funny.

I’m in Singapore and many public pools here use something called Poseidon for drowning detection. Similar to what you said, we have a digital display that shows ‘Poseidon’ most of the time.

Only when there’s a possible drowning will they show the location on the display.

If there are cameras set up above the pool, it might be this same system at your YMCA.

Thanks a lot! I’d love to visit your amazing country one day

We had that system at my pool but stopped the service to save money during Covid. It was a cool system but sometimes gave false alarms, especially if people were kneeling in shallow water. Here’s a link if you want to check it out: https://poseidon-tech.com/

@Merlin
Do they have lifeguards too?

I think they do, because if someone is drowning… but my whole job as a lifeguard is to keep an eye on the pool.

Yes, there are still lifeguards who watch, help, and sometimes give warnings. I don’t see them cutting back on lifeguards with that system in place.

The drowning detection system is probably just an extra safety measure.

@Merlin
Really, I didn’t know that…

@Merlin
All the Y locations by me have Poseidon too. Plus lifeguards. But the lifeguards often have to turn Poseidon off because it goes off for things that have nothing to do with drowning!

Are you located in Virginia?

I grew up in Charlottesville in the 90s and always wanted to swim for them. They had the best mascot.

Haha no, I’m in the southeast though.
