What's the best beginner's tip you received before you started swimming?

Although when I started swimming, I don’t recollect receiving any tips or an inspiring quote from my coach. We just always headed straight into the sessions, and to be honest, I loved it so much, he never had to say anything much to keep me going. But I would love to know if anyone has ever received any such interesting advice?

If you lift your head, your hips will sink.

Came from my mom when I was in 4th grade: “Cry all you want. I don’t really give a shit if you don’t want to go. I paid for this and you will get your ass to the pool so I can get my money’s worth. Plus, I want to Jazzercise while you are swimming.” If that doesn’t get you motivated, I don’t know what will.

But did she wear the leg warmers and headband?

It was the 90s. I don’t ever remember her wearing a headband, but I bet she had leg warmers.

My coach always told me I was lifting my head too much while breathing. She would say, “Stop looking for Jesus, Emma!” Every now and then, I’ll remember that while swimming and laugh, but then correct my head when I turn to side breathe.

Prioritize mastering your form over speed.

Don’t over-kick; it will drain your energy quickly.

Don’t kick…at all?

Accept that you will have to share lanes. Treat passing, being passed, and being aware of other swimmers as another skill set that must be learned, practiced, and perfected. Also, accept that no one is perfect; that way, you will be pleasantly surprised instead of disappointed.

Concentrate on staying in the water, breathing, and leg coordination instead of trying to reach the end of the pool quickly.

Breathe out through your nose while your head is in the water.

When rotating to breathe, keep your head straight like you’re a kebab turning. :joy:

Speed doesn’t matter.

Wait, is this like part of a quote, like speed isn’t everything (wait for it… wait for it… speed is the only thing).

Nope. It is the whole thing.

Learn to breathe on both sides of the pool.

Learn proper technique to avoid injury. Currently sporting a strained neck muscle after over-rotating to breathe in a long set.

Don’t rush; it’s not a race. I now swim regularly 5 days a week for 90 mins each day. I love swimming. Used to go Saturdays but now I go during the week. Breaststroke underwater return, doing front crawl, can dive down, swim along the pool floor, dolphin kick with legs together and arms at my side, deep breath & just kick legs, last 20 mins backstroke. I swim with a lady I’ve met; it’s great fun!
