Who learned to swim in their 30s +? Share your story please :)

I would appreciate any insights or suggestions.

31M here. Been swimming 3 days a week for 3 months now. It’s been amazing for my mental health, and I absolutely love it. It’s never too late to start.

My grandma learned to swim in her 60s. The funny part? She grew up on an island!

I started at 34 (F). Took lessons for 4 months and now swim freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke. I try to swim 3 times a week, and I absolutely love being in the water.

29 here. Just learned and it took me 20 lessons. It was hard, but I’m doing great now. Many people in my cohort were older, so it’s definitely doable.

I’m 35 and started swimming about 3 months ago. After 6 sessions with a coach, I can do freestyle, albeit turtle-paced. It gets easier every time.

42F. I knew basic stuff like back float and treading water but started proper lessons 3 years ago. Now I’m a free diver! I regularly dive with buddies and have even caught lobsters and scallops. It’s been such a fulfilling journey.

Started at 50 after being a lifelong runner. Took private lessons, joined a masters club, and eventually started competing. I’ve even done open water events up to 5K. It’s never too late to dive in—literally.

I surfed all my life but learned to swim laps at 28. It made me a better surfer and healthier overall. Now in my late 50s, I’m swimming better and faster than ever. Plan to keep going well into my 80s, like my dad did.

Started at 38. Was terrified of putting my face in the water, but after consistent lessons and practice, I’m now swimming laps 2-3 times a week. Took me about a year to feel comfortable.

I learned in my 40s mostly through YouTube videos. Once I had the basics, I polished my technique with a few lessons. It’s been a transformative journey.

I was 41 and couldn’t even swim a length. Took adult lessons and now I’m doing triathlons, including a half Ironman. Don’t let embarrassment stop you—it’s so worth it.

32F here. I had past trauma with swimming but took personal lessons to overcome my fear. Now I can do half a lap of freestyle. It’s been challenging but incredibly rewarding for my mental health and back pain.

At 31, I trained to become a beach lifeguard in just one month. Couldn’t even swim a lap when I started, but now I can do 7:55 for 550m. Planning to move to Florida to pursue lifeguarding full time!

I’m a swim instructor and lifeguard—happy to answer any questions about learning to swim as an adult!
