Why do lean people sink more in water?

I’ve noticed that my lean friends struggle to float while others stay on the surface easily. Is this because of muscle or something else?

It’s mostly due to muscle density. Muscle is denser than water, so it sinks, unlike fat, which is less dense.

That makes sense. So body composition plays a huge role in buoyancy?

@Shay
Exactly. A mix of fat, muscle, and lung capacity determines how well someone floats or sinks.

Saltwater also makes floating easier. It’s denser than freshwater, so everyone feels more buoyant in the ocean.

I’ve always had to keep moving in water to avoid sinking. It gets exhausting.
