Why does yard swimming use 2 lane ropes?

To break up wake even more.

Less wavy water = swimmers go brrrrrrrrrtt.

If you heard the brrrttt, the swimmer wasn’t aiming at you.

That’s the sound you’d hear if you listened to me mouth breathe while swimming laps :joy:.

It helps prevent waves from other lanes from washing over. World Aquatics (formerly FINA) bans the use of multiple lane lines, which is why you only see this in SCY (Short Course Yards). They only recognize SCM (Short Course Meters) and LCM (Long Course Meters) events.

@Thames
Why does FINA ban them? It seems fairer for competitors to reduce waves.

First, we have single lane markers. Then double lane markers. I’ve even seen triple lane markers. Where does it stop? The standard is a single lane because it can be consistently applied across venues.

@Florian
That makes sense.

@Florian
Just imagining tons of lane ropes, where the pool is invisible, only lane ropes. Imagine diving into that :grimacing:.

@Florian
FINA is apparently fighting against Big Lane Line.

Also, lane ropes are $$$. I was shocked at how much they cost and then how short their lifespan is—around 5 to 6 years.

@Bryn
Back in the day, my home pool had lane lines that were basically like garden hoses. The swim club wanted real lane lines, and the city approved it only if they bought them. To save costs, they built nine LCM lane lines by hand. The kicker? They found out that nothing floated, so they had to add buoy things after finishing.

@Thames
Thanks! I didn’t know that.

Better to hit your hand with.

I can feel it on my fingers! I’m chicken-winging my fly as we speak.

Every time I split lanes, I question how my hand can hurt so much while in the water.

I never understood why multiple lane lines aren’t encouraged. It makes for fair competition. If you don’t believe that riding someone’s wake isn’t beneficial, check this out:

I knew what it was without clicking, then still clicked, and was not disappointed.

@Bryce
I heard ‘HERE COMES LEZAK!!’ before clicking.
