I need some advice about my local public pool. I want to start swimming during lane swim, but I only feel comfortable with breaststroke. If you’ve shared a lane with someone doing breaststroke, does it bother you or affect your workout?
I do not want to be in anyone’s way or cause any issues. I know the basics: gliding while passing, staying close to the right, and not stopping mid-lap. I plan to use the slow lane, but I’m worried I might not keep up. I’m also 14 weeks pregnant, so I’m hoping lane swimming will be easier on my body.
Hi Tracy! It’s great that you’re considering swimming, especially during pregnancy. Swimming is a low-impact exercise that can be very beneficial for both you and your baby. Here are some thoughts:
Breaststroke is perfectly fine: Many swimmers use different strokes during lane swimming, including breaststroke. As long as you’re mindful of others and follow the pool rules, you should be fine.
Respect lane speeds: Pools usually have lanes designated for different speeds. If you’re worried about your speed, sticking to the slow lane as you plan is a good idea. Remember, it’s about your comfort and safety, not speed.
Communication is key: If you’re sharing a lane, communicate with your lane mate. Let them know you’ll be doing breaststroke. Most swimmers are understanding and will appreciate the heads up.
Consider off-peak hours: If you’re concerned about crowded lanes, you might want to consider swimming during off-peak hours when the pool is less busy.
Listen to your body: Since you’re pregnant, it’s important to listen to your body. If you feel any discomfort, take a break. Don’t push yourself too hard.
Remember, everyone at the pool is there to enjoy their workout, just like you. As long as you’re respectful of others, there’s no reason why you can’t swim using the breaststroke. Happy swimming!
