Ceramic Tiles or Vinyl Liner for New Pool?

We’re building a 9x4.5 meter pool with a small shallow area for kids and are deciding between ceramic tiles and vinyl liner for the surface. We’ve ruled out paint and would appreciate any insights or experiences with these two options.

Background:

  • Pool walls and bottom are concrete.
  • Concrete stairs in one corner.
  • Mediterranean climate: hot summers, mild winters.
  • The pool will be emptied in winter.
  • Considering renting out the property when not in use.
  • Aesthetically, we prefer mosaic tiles but are leaning towards larger tiles (up to 30x30 cm) due to budget.

Could someone share the pros and cons of each option? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The “paint” choice is not always plaster. Certain pools are coated concrete using epoxy. That’s not a very good choice. Here, tile really shines.

Tiles any day. The only drawback is the price. I would choose a tile made especially for a pool because pool tiles are often little; I’m not sure why.

@AquaAdventurer Yes, there is a price difference, but it’s not quite as significant as I had anticipated. Naturally, a smaller tile will cost more since it needs more labor and grout, which is expensive especially for pools.

If the liner pool is left empty for too long, it will end badly.

@BreaststrokeBuff Thank you for letting me know.

Tile seems like a great deal at the price you mentioned. In my location, plaster is the favored material since tile would be too costly. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a swimming pool made entirely of tile, but it would be revolutionary if tile was around the same price. Just a few little tiled spots for accents.
