Curious what is a novice/beginner/first time swimmer’s 100m backstroke time?

I have seen some clips from the olympics, and I’m just wondering, what the context to an average human off the street who doesnt really swim outside of beach days, for example.

Thank you

It’s uncommon to come across a “first time swimmer” that could finish a 100 meters, though I’m not sure about backstroke.

I’m estimating that a beginner or novice who can go the distance more slowly could finish the 100 meters in between two and three minutes!

@SWIMLOVER oh interesting, so 100m is a pretty rigorous distance for a first timer?

And I’ve seen alternating arm strokes as well as both arms at once, does it not matter as long as a swimmer is on their back?

Thank you

If you don’t swim outside of beach or pool parties, swimming 100 meters might be challenging if you don’t breathe correctly, pace yourself, and know when to stop. The most common backstroke is alternating, but I’ve also seen folks “row” along the lane in the manner of a canoe. Alternating appears to be faster in terms of speed.

Why specifically backstroke? I would guess there aren’t a lot of complete novices doing a 100m back but my guess it they are doing it well over 2:00

Well over 3 mins too and probably even 4.
