How do you manage to fit swimming in with your other interests—working out, running, etc.?

Every other night after work, I visit the gym. On my days off, I usually go running after work.

Every time I work out at the gym, I can’t help but feel like it’s summer and the weather is perfect. Oh, how I wish I could be outside taking in this.

That made me consider my other outdoor interests, which include swimming, trail running, biking, etc.

How do you, fellow frequent gym attendees or ex gym goers, manage your gym habit with these other interests? I’m curious about any thoughts or solutions.

My gym ritual is swimming laps

It doesn’t need to be so strict. Sometimes I’m more a gym person, sometimes (like now) I’m more of a swimmer. You can surf and try different variations whenever you want, that’s the magic. There’s a spectrum of activities that you like and sometimes you can focus more on a few and other times on the others. For example: I was hitting the gym 6x per week last year, now I got bored. I’m currently playing volleyball at least once per week with the people from my gym, I’m swimming 3 times per week and hitting the gym 2 or 3 times per week. If I’m feeling energetic I also run or bike 2x per week. What I try to do is to at least plan my week to place things in a way that it doesn’t hurt me or burn me out somehow. If I’m swimming Monday, Friday and Saturday, I try to place upper body workouts at the gym Tuesday or Wednesday so I have time to recover and so on.

Swim 3-4 times a week, run other 3. I hit the gym on the weekend after my swim.

I try to lift three times a week. I’m now attempting to make swimming three times a week a priority, followed by preferably one bike ride and one run. To make it happen, I’ve lifted, swum, biked, and lifted on the same day twice this week. I’ve done three lifting sessions, two bike rides, three swims, and one run in the past week. In addition, my wife, who is pregnant and works a full-time job, and I put in sixty hours of work from Thursday to Sunday. It is feasible.

It depends on how hardcore you go, I go easy, I run, swim and go to the gym, swim days are also gym days…
