How Much Liquid Chlorine Equals Granular Shock?

I was never told the conversion rate between liquid chlorine and granular shock in my training. I understand that purity can make a difference. Could someone help me with a simple comparison or conversion?

This is a calculator you’d use. Input the volume on the top right. Then compute either liquid or cal-hypo. My guesstimated statistics appear to be incorrect, or this is the case. This may be based on my memory.

A pound of Cal Hypo shock raises the Free Chlorine by several parts in 15,000 gallons (about 3-6 parts). Liquid chlorine from Costco at 7% would require several gallons, costing me over $18.

For me, Cal-Hypo costs about $4.50 per pound (at 62-68% strength), while liquid chlorine is around $6-7 per gallon at 7% (Clorox Bleach from Costco). I’m not sure what higher concentration liquid chlorine would cost in Honolulu, but I didn’t use liquid chlorine for long. Instead, I prefer to drain some water during rainy months to lower the CYA and use chlorine tabs.

@Gia because you get 7.5% at Costco, haha.

To assist with the dosage of liquid chlorine, you can download the pool math app.

10% liquid chlorine is equivalent to around 1 pound of hypo, according on what I’ve read.

@Terryanne This is it. The pool math app is genius.
