I have a RayPak R336A pool heater located in my garage, and it’s connected to a Tjernlund UC1 control unit for the power vent. The previous owner had bypassed the UC1 control, so the power vent runs continuously whenever the pool heater has power, which is not ideal for remote temperature control.
I asked my installer to fix this and have the power vent turn on only when the heater is firing. However, they couldn’t get it to work correctly because the RayPak control board only has two terminals labeled “Splice here for vent (optional).” These are currently wired to turn the power vent on when the heater is about to fire, but then the heater won’t ignite as there’s no signal from the vent prover.
The question is: are these two terminals meant to turn on the power vent or receive a signal that the vent is running? I can’t figure out how to make it do both.
Has anyone successfully wired a RayPak heater with a UC1 control unit for the power vent? Any advice would be appreciated.
@Gia The instructions for connecting a power vent are not very clear. It only states that the primary gas valve will open when the air flow has been “proven.” One possibility that comes to mind is that the RayPak is not able to communicate with the power vent to activate. Maybe that’s what the pool control system is meant to accomplish.
@Gia There are three wires in the UC1 controller for the power vent. For example, when the prover (the vacuum switch) verifies that there is airflow and a common ground, it can receive a signal to activate the vent and then transmit a signal. The fact that the RayPak controller only has two connections suggests that it cannot be utilized in that manner. Unless—and this is what I’m attempting to verify—I am missing something.
@DiveDeepDreamer According to the figure on page 20 of the power vent handbook, the violet/black wire should go to pin 1 of terminal block P4, the violet/white wire should go to TH, and the yellow/black wire should go to TR. Before wiring it up this manner, please be sure.
