Is it inappropriate to swim in the Lap pool as a slow beginner?

I am a slow swimmer, so I am not sure where to start when I want to start swimming laps. Lap swim, therapy pool, DD2 lessons, water aerobics, and deep water fusion lessons are all available at my neighborhood aquatics center.

This is all I found on the page, however I am not sure where to begin as a newbie who is really obese. I also do not want to be asked to leave the lap pool section and look foolish.

Any advice or recommendations would be much valued.

As a beginner new to lap swimming, consider starting with swimming lessons or joining water aerobics classes at your aquatics center. Lessons will help you build confidence in the water and improve your swimming technique, while water aerobics provides a low-impact, supportive environment to get active in the pool. If available, the therapy pool can offer a gentler introduction, especially if you have concerns about joint discomfort or weight. Once you feel more comfortable, gradually transition to lap swim sessions. Choose a lane that matches your pace, focus on building endurance rather than speed, and don’t hesitate to ask lifeguards or staff for guidance. Remember, everyone starts somewhere, and taking it step-by-step will help you progress confidently in your swimming journey.

Honestly, just get in the water. Most places have multiple lanes with varying speeds so you shouldn’t have a problem finding a lane to suit.
