Losing my mind over swim caps & ear plugs

I have pretty long hair & my normal swim cap always seems to slip off my head. I also have pretty sensitive ears so I wear the wax ear plugs. But I have issues with these not working. I bought a swimmers ear headband, the one they make for kids… didn’t work. I bought a new cap for LONG hair, and it slips off even worse than my normal one. I’m losing my mind because I can’t be present in my lap swimming if my cap is coming off and my ears are filling with water. Can someone please help?

Spend some time washing all the product out of your hair and your cap before you put the cap on. Make a bun on the back of your head, like directly where the goggle straps would rest, not too high and not too low. Put the goggles over the cap so one strap goes above the bun and one goes below. Swim a lap then smoosh the cap down over your head to squeeze out the air bubbles.

I wear a lycra cap during practices. I started doing it primarily because I overheat easily, but it never slips. For meets, I put my silicone cap on top.

Where did you get a Lycra hat for long hair? Also an overheater but only found poly ones and none of the fit my hair.

@Oaklan
Are you in Australia? We have a few here.

I am. I found Speedo ones, but they said they wouldn’t fit my hair. If you have some suggestions that would be great :blush: Only just started swimming again :swimming_woman:.

@Oaklan
I will need to find it and get back to you, but I have some lycra ones not marked for long hair, but I have a massive head (I get my hats custom made) and long hair; they fit perfect. I’ll look tonight.

I know! I also got their cute Aussie snail cap. They might not be perfect for you but work amazing for me. I’ve even worn one over my wig in drag.

I like the squishy silicone ear plugs. You shape them to fit your ears exactly.

My cap will slip off if there’s a lot of product/conditioner in my hair. Also, if my forehead has a lot of moisturizer on it. I wash my face and pat it dry before I put my cap on, and that helps.

I also had my silicone cap slipping - and figured out if I wash it with soap in the shower after my swim that it is more grippy the next practice! My hair products were building up in the cap I guess.

Hiii I was having the same problems, exactly the same.

What I’ve been doing these past weeks is that I put the wax earplugs in, tie my hair, wet my hands and wet just a bit of my hair, put on the cap, and put two normal headbands over my cap and ears.

I put my hair up in a bun on the crown of my head before putting on my swim cap. I use a silicone cap made for long hair that has a bump in its shape to fit my hair.

I always lose my cap at 500-1000 yards. Every time.

For a swim cap for long and thick hair, I use the ones from TYR. Thicker material + legit for long hair. And durable. 1 and a half years of swimming with a single cap.
Speedo is not at all as durable ( 3 months tops) + uncomfortable still for long hair.

I can’t help you with earplugs.

@Noah
That’s exactly what I use. I also used to tie it, but I was having the same problem as OP. I just wet my hair a little, put the cap on my head, and tuck hair in… haven’t had a problem since!!

@Noah
Seconding the TYR swim cap for long hair. I use it on my daily swims, and it’s been great for me, I purchased it on Amazon.

I coat my hair with Aqua Guard and put a Lycra cap over it. The Lycra is forgiving enough to also pull it over my ears so I don’t lose my earplugs.

Here’s a good article that gives you options including one that covers ears and might help with your earplug problem:
