I just bought an old house with a pool, and it came with a Polaris that looks like this picture. It connects to the pool wall for water, but it’s not working great—it often falls over and drags. The jet halfway up the hose isn’t working well either. I’m thinking about getting a new one. Do you know if a replacement would connect to the same wall hookup?
Got a similar model. I needed to purchase a float and an extra bag, and I found that watching some YouTube videos helped troubleshoot most issues. It’s a good model but a bit pricey. For the winter, though, I plan to buy a cordless one.
If you can handle a screwdriver, use pliers, and navigate YouTube and Amazon on your iPad, you can master working on this Polaris yourself. I was in your shoes as a beginner two years ago, learning to adjust everything from hose lengths and tail sweep pressure to replacing tires, gears, floats, and backup valves. You can do it too! Better replacements can be costly.
When using a pressure side cleaner, it’s crucial that the water flow is optimal—no leaks in the hose, etc. If the flow isn’t correct, the cleaner might struggle with climbing the walls, getting stuck in corners, flipping over, or experiencing other problems.
The pool builder provided us with one, but I could never get it to work properly. Even when it did work, the mesh bag allowed fine debris to slip through, which ended up back on the floor. It worked decently for larger debris like twigs and leaves, but didn’t pick up finer particles such as pollen or dust.
I switched to a Hayward Shark Vac XL, and it’s been fantastic. It efficiently collects even the smallest dust particles from the floor, scrubs the walls and tiles, and traps all the dirt in its own filters, preventing any debris from entering the pool pump and filter. This results in less frequent cleaning of the pool filter.
There are other options as well. My neighbors have a Polaris 9550 or 9560, which is a robotic cleaner. It operates independently with its own power source and control box, featuring an internal filter that captures dirt without relying on the pool pump or pressure.
I have the same Polaris that came with my new pool, but unfortunately, it has never worked properly. It requires constant attention despite all the adjustments we’ve made. I’ve put it in the garage and switched to a cordless robot instead.

I purchased a generic model from Amazon called a “Smorobot,” and I’m really pleased with it! It works well, cleaning both the walls and the waterline. While it doesn’t have the mapping capabilities of pricier models, it does a great job with fine debris and doesn’t miss much. I feel like it offers great value for the cost. After I praised it, my friend also bought one. His only issue is that it seems to move slower compared to a pressure cleaner, but that doesn’t bother me at all.
